We live in a society today that, to me, seems to more and more be afraid. Am I right on this? And, to the extent that I am right, that we are living more and more in the state of fear, I'm wondering: What, exactly, are we afraid of? Please, share...

I agree with this. Especially since to access the light within you, it requires that you take responsibility for your own life. And I think people fear responsibility because it means they have to make changes to their negative habits. Its easier to just go with the flow then to try and reach your full potential.
Here's something that might help get us started, a statement attributed to Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa (1994-99) ... "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us."
